Treece Relocation Assistance Project Nears Completion

Land Auction Set for Feb. 8 in Nearby Northeast Oklahoma

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Treece Relocation Assistance (TRA) Project has entered the final phase of relocation activities for the former Southeast Kansas town impacted by historic mining operations. The TRA Trust and Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have worked cooperatively since 2010 to relocate the residents of the City of Treece, Kan., due to public health and environmental hazards.

The TRA Trust has scheduled a land auction for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Ottawa County (Okla.) Road Department Office (Former Picher City Hall), 1001 N. Connell, Picher, Okla. Ten parcels are available for purchase at the auction, each having a Kansas Environmental Use Control (EUC) restricting the use of the property to prevent human occupancy, building construction or other uses that may disturb the vegetation. Acceptable land use includes wildlife habitat and livestock grazing. A regional map depicting the ten parcels and accompanying EUCs can be found on the Treece Buyout Auction Information web page at www.kdheks.gov/treece. Chesnutt and Chesnutt Auctioneers also have auction information available at www.chesnuttauctioneers.com.

The next TRA Trust meeting is set for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at the lower level break room in the Cherokee County Courthouse in Columbus, Kan.

A granite historical marker installed at the northwest corner of U.S. Hwy. 69 and Treece Road (state line) was dedicated to the former Treece residents following the property purchases that were completed in 2013.
