Security Best Practice Reminder: Don’t fall for phishing or spoofing scams!

The Enterprise Security Office has requested that employees be reminded to be vigilant in protecting their personal information and usernames/passwords from criminals seeking to acquire sensitive information.  Criminals can and will generate e-mail messages, a practice referred to as “phishing”, that appear to be from a legitimate source and may direct employees to ‘validate’ your userid/password or direct an employee to a website that requires a username/password and looks nearly identical to actual websites the employee may use.  These criminal enterprises attempt to gain access to personal information by pretending to be employers, social web sites, government entities, financial institutions, credit card companies, etc. and tricking individuals into providing their personal username/password which then allows the criminals to access personal information.

Expiration of Passwords for Employee Self-Service occurred at 6pm on 1/14/2014

It was reported to the Enterprise Security Office (January 14, 2014) that some State of Kansas employees received spoofed e-mails that appeared to be from the Kansas Service Center help desk asking them to validate and confirm their secure sign-on profile.

While there is no evidence of any compromise, in order to ensure the integrity of employee data, we made the decision to expire all existing passwords in Employee Self Service. This means that the next time you attempt to log-in to one of these systems, you will need to use the ‘Forgot Password’ functionality to establish a new password.

If any individual who received the spoofed e-mail clicked on the links and provided any requested information, please have the employee contact the Kansas Service Desk in Topeka at 785.296.1900 or toll-free 1.866.999.3001 to report the incident.

Please remind all employees to be vigilant when receiving email messages that originate from an unknown sender/email address and direct the individual to locations where a username and password are required. Looking closely at the spelling, grammar, and actual URL (web address) can give you hints that the email is not legitimate.

We apologize for any inconvenience. We took this action to protect your personal information.
