Fire Extinguishers and
Commercial Hood Suppression Systems

Firms that service, inspect, or install fire extinguishers or fixed extinguishing systems are required to be certified by the State Fire Marshal in accordance with K.S.A. 31-133a. Article 10 of the Kansas Fire Marshal Administrative Regulations (K.A.R. 22-10-1 through 22-10-19) applies to the servicing firms for certification, compliance and consumer protection. There are four classes of certifications:

RA

Permits servicing, charging, recharging, installing or inspection of fixed extinguishing systems providing proof of manufacturer’s authorization

RB

Permits servicing, charging, recharging, installing or inspecting of portable fire extinguishers

RC

Permits hydrostatic testing on non-DOT cylinders such as wet or dry chemical containers

RD

Permits servicing, charging, recharging, installing or inspecting fixed extinguishing systems having proof of manufacturer's training or by passing Kansas State Fire Marshal examination annually

 

TO BECOME CERTIFIED:

In general, you will submit an application, proof of insurance, and fee. If you are applying for an RA or RD license, you will also need to submit further documentation. The application is the same for each class of license. Separate applications do not need to be submitted for each license being applied for.

For an RA license:

  • Application form
  • Proof of a minimum of $500,000 insurance covering comprehensive general liability, bodily injury, property damage and completed operations
  • $50 application fee**
  • Written authorization from each fixed extinguishing system manufacturer whose products are used by the business, including the types of systems the business is authorized and has been trained to install or service

For an RB license:

  • Application form
  • Proof of a minimum of $100,000 insurance covering comprehensive general liability, bodily injury, property damage and completed operations.
  • $25 application fee**

For an RC license:

  • Application form
  • Proof of a minimum of $100,000 insurance covering comprehensive general liability, bodily injury, property damage and completed operations.
  • $25 application fee**

For an RD license:

  • Application form
  • Proof of a minimum of $1,000,000 insurance covering comprehensive general liability, bodily injury, property damage and completed operations.
  • $50 non-refundable application and test fee**
  • Proof that an employee has either:
    • received training from the manufacturer of each fixed extinguishing system whose products are used by the business eindicating the type or types of systems the employee has been trained to service, OR
    • submitted a notarized affidavit AND taken a written examination administered by KSFMO. The notarized affidavit shall attest that the employee has a minimum of two years experience in serviceing, recharging and inspecting fixed extinguishing systems and has access to the tools and service manuals for each fixed extinguishing system the business services. The written examination must be passed within the current calendar year and a passing grade is 70%.

**Any person who is an officer or employ of the state or any political or taxing subdivision of the state, when that person is acting on behalf o the state or political or taxing subdivision, is exempt from paying fees

RENEWING YOUR CERTIFICATION:

Certificates are valid for one calendar year. Renewal applications must be submitted to KSFMO no later than November 30 of the year the certificate expires. For all current certificate holders, renewal applications will be sent out prior to the November 30th deadline. In the event renewal paperwork is not received, it is the responsibility of the certified individual or firm to contact KSFMO for an application. The requirements for a certification renewal are the same as for new certification.

Please note that an on-site inspection may be made to insure that the proper equipment is available for servicing fire protection equipment.
