S.B. 636 amends adoption statutes which require a new birth certificate be issued to provide an exception to this requirement when the court determines that it is in the best interests of the child that the original certificate of birth remain in effect.
The bill was introduced in response to a request for legislation from a constituent of Senator Vidricksen. A situation arose where grandparents adopted their grandchild whose parents had been killed in a car wreck and the grandparents did not want a new birth certificate issued deleting the names of the child's parents.
The bill will not have any fiscal impact on the state.
