About

The KBI Forensic Science Laboratory is committed to providing timely forensic science services to the Kansas criminal justice community. The Laboratory system consists of four accredited laboratories located in Topeka, Great Bend, Kansas City and Pittsburg. Each laboratory has been accredited in the field of Forensic Testing by ANAB to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 International Standard and ANAB Accreditation Requirements For Forensic Testing and Calibration. Evidence, related to all types of criminal cases, is accepted from qualified customers and examined at no cost. The KBI Forensic Science Laboratory is funded by the Kansas Legislature and laboratory fees that are court ordered from convicted offenders in accordance with K.S.A. 28-176.

Laboratory accreditation requirements dictate that customers (law enforcement, attorneys, court personnel, etc.) be notified of certain laboratory procedures and policies. This notice serves as a general notification to customers of these practices. Any customer submitting evidence to the KBI Forensic Science Laboratory accepts these terms. Employees of the KBI Forensic Science Laboratory are dedicated to preserving the safety of Kansas citizens through the application of science and modern technology.

Expert Witness Testimony

KBI Forensic Scientists provide expert witness testimony in support of scientific examinations performed. Requests for testimony should be made through service of a subpoena.

Internship Program

The KBI Forensic Science Center Internship Program offers students the ability to apply classroom theory by working and learning alongside qualified scientists in various forensic disciplines. Not only will students gain practical forensic experience, but they will also increase their post-graduate marketability.
