Criminal Justice Information SystemIncluded in the Criminal Justice Information Services Division are the Criminal Justice Records Unit, the Crime Data Information Center, Communications/Audit and Training Unit and the Data Processing Unit. These units have statutory responsibilities in maintaining the central repository for the state of Kansas criminal justice information system. The Criminal Justice Records Unit serves as the central repository for all adult criminal history records and all juvenile records in the state. Another aspect of the records unit is fingerprint identification. It is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Personnel in this unit classify fingerprint cards and identify the subjects of criminal history record checks, based on fingerprint cards submitted. The Crime Data Information Center serves as the central clearinghouse for criminal justice system statistical data and produces annual and periodic publications, including Crime in Kansas and manages the Kansas Sex Offender Registration System and the state's Missing Person Clearinghouse. The Communications Unit provides service to more than 260 criminal justice agencies in Kansas which have access to the Automated Statewide Telecommunications and Records Access (ASTRA) network. The ASTRA network allows these agencies to communicate with other criminal justice agencies within the state and throughout the nation. Communications personnel monitor the security system at headquarters. Employees of the KBI Audit and Training Unit are responsible for auditing ASTRA terminal agencies to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws. In addition, they monitor compliance with regulations regarding the network and dissemination of criminal history record information.
