No. 03-008 SOLDIER MAKES KANSAS HISTORY Col. Lisa McPeak achieved history by becoming the first female promoted to colonel in the Kansas Army National Guard. Brig. Gen. Ron Mason, Assistant Division Commander, Maneuver, 35th Infantry Division (Mech.), promoted McPeak in a ceremony at Fort Riley, Kan. McPeak is the division surgeon for the 35th Infantry Division, which is headquartered at Fort Leavenworth. She is currently stationed at Fort Riley, training for her division’s upcoming deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Having served 19 years in the military, McPeak said she’s honored by the promotion. “It’s very nice to be awarded a rank that I’d never thought I’d achieve," said McPeak. "In the Kansas Army National Guard this is the highest that I can go.” McPeak said her next military goals are ensuring an appropriate medical plan is provided for the soldiers deploying to Bosnia, and coming home safely. Once her deployment is complete, McPeak said she’s looking forward to continuing her service in the Guard, “in whatever mission is provided.” McPeak received her medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1986. She was commissioned in 1983 through the U.S. Army Reserves Health Professions Scholarship Program. Her civilian occupation is assistant professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. She resides in Overland Park, Kan. with her spouse, Bart, and children, Celena, 6, and Chloe, 2. -30-
