| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July
12, 2005 No. 05-066 GOVERNOR TO VISIT "AMELIA'S ANGELS" AT KANSAS STARBASE Governor Kathleen Sebelius will address girls attending the Kansas
STARBASE "Amelia's Angels" Academy on Wednesday, July 13,
at 1:30 p.m. in the STARBASE classroom, Room 352, Hanger 662 at the 190th
Air Refueling Wing, Forbes Field. Amelia's Angels is a special STARBASE academy. Only girls from the age
of 9-11 were permitted to sign-up. All the presenters for the five day
long academy are women active in a variety of careers, such as pilots,
engineers, mechanics and other professions. Gov. Sebelius will be speaking during the "Dreams+Action= Reality"
goal-setting segment of the academy, which runs through Friday, July 15.
She will be relating her own experiences and the aspirations she had when
she was a girl. "The idea is to show the girl's that they can choose any career
they want," said Jeff Gabriel, executive director of Kansas STARBASE.
"We're encouraging them to 'think big' when selecting a goal in life." Gabriel said this is the third year for the Amelia's Angels Academy,
named for Kansas aviatrix Amelia Earheart. On Thursday, July 14, the students will have a mentoring lunch from 11
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. "Earlier, the girls were asked to choose three things they wanted
to be when they became adults," said Gabriel. Gabriel added that the pilot, a student at Kansas State University, will
be flying in at the beginning of the session. "That'll be kind of neat," said Gabriel. STARBASE (Science and Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation
and Space Exploration), a National Guard program, is a unique opportunity
for students completing 4th, 5th or 6th grade. Academies take STARBASE
students through activities where they investigate the Laws of Motion,
discover the Properties of Air and explore the Forces of Flight. Students
also meet and interact with pilots, navigators, computer technicians,
civil engineers and other highly trained professionals. -30- |
