AMATEUR RADIO EVENT TO HONOR 150 YEARS OF GUARD HISTORY
On Saturday April 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, a special event to honor the 150th
anniversary of the Kansas National Guard is being sponsored by the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL).
Members of the ARRL, a nation-wide organization for furthering amateur radio,
will gather at the Kansas National Guard Museum at Forbes Field, Topeka, for
this event.
ARRL members will be using two high frequency radios. Their goal is to talk
to as many of the ham radio operators as possible in the United States and around
the world.
While this event will honor all Kansas veterans, and especially those that
gave their lives in the service of their country, it is centered on honoring
the Kansas National Guard for their 150 years of service to the state and nation,
including their service as a territorial military organization.
"It is the amateur radio community's way of saying thank you
to all National Guard members," said Steve Hamilton, ARRL state government
liaison. "This will also give people a chance to see ham radio in action
and how we handle radio traffic in a civil emergency."
"Several of the ham radio operators are current members of either the
Kansas Army or Air National Guard," added Hamilton.
This serves a three-fold mission, said Hamilton, to recognize and honor the
Kansas National Guard for 150 years of successful service, bring attention to
ham radio and promote the Kansas National Guard Museum nation-wide.
The Kansas National Guard Museum is located at Forbes Field, Topeka. For additional
