FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 19, 2007 No. 07-202
POWER BEING RESTORED WITH FEWER THAN 8,500 KANSAS CUSTOMERS STILL IN THE DARK
Power crews have restored service to thousands of Kansas customers since the ice and snow storm moved into the state last week, however, it may still be a week before some Kansans have their power back. Fewer than 8,500 customers are now without power. (Westar has approximately 550 customers out of service and Kansas Rural Electric Cooperatives have approximately 7,600 customers without power).
Various Scams Continue to Be Reported
County emergency managers continue to report to the state of Kansas and to FEMA that they are receiving reports of vendors going door-to-door in some communities trying to offer services or sell generators, and telling the residents they will be reimbursed by FEMA for the cost of the generator or for work in removing storm debris from private property. FEMA officials emphasize that these costs for individuals are not reimbursable under the present emergency declaration in Kansas. In addition, FEMA only reimburses for generators when Individual Assistance has been approved and only when there is documented medical need. Individual Assistance has not been approved in Kansas for this storm.
Anyone approached by someone claiming charges to you for work or for a generator will be reimbursed by FEMA should contact local law enforcement or the Kansas Attorney Generals Office at 1-800-432-2310.
Restock Home and Travel Emergency Kits
State officials are monitoring the potential for another winter storm to move into portions of the state this weekend. As travel is expected to increase for the holiday weekend, Kansans are urged to monitor weather reports, and to make sure they have restocked their travel emergency kit and their home emergency kit with water, food and medications and other emergency items for each family member. Additional information regarding emergency kits is available at www.ready.gov and www.ksready.gov.
Kansans may monitor also road conditions by calling 511 or going to http://511.ksdot.org. -30- |
