Greensburg Public Information Update

- A curfew remains in effect for Greensburg from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Residents
may enter the city at checkpoints on U-54 east and west of town during the
day, but must leave the city by the 8 p.m. curfew. Residents are permitted
to bring trucks, trailers, and tow trucks into Greensburg. When parking these
vehicles, residents should leave room for emergency vehicles on the streets.
Residents may also bring contractors they have hired into Greensburg to assist
them. However, contractors that have not been hired by residents or businesses
in Greensburg will be turned away at the checkpoint.
- Greensburg Mayor Lonnie McCollum has scheduled a town hall meeting at 5
p.m., Friday, May 11, at the white tent west of Davis Park. City, county,
state, and FEMA officials will be there to answer your questions.
- The churches of Greensburg will be holding a non-denominational church service
at 11a.m. on Sunday, May 13 in Davis Park.
- Funeral services for the following victims of the Greensburg Tornado have
been announced.
a. The family of Claude Hopkins will hold a visitation at Haviland Friends
Church from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2007. Graveside services for
Mr. Hopkins will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Greensburg at 10 a.m.,
Friday, May 11, 2007.
b. The funeral service for Colleen Panzer will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, May 13,
2007 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kinsley. Burial will be 5:00 PM Sunday,
May 13, 2007 at Fairview Cemetery in Greensburg.
- One Stop Shop at Barclay College for storm victims includes the following:
assistance from the Kansas Department of Revenue, SRS, the Disaster Assistance
Center, and Red Cross Client Services. If you need Red Cross assistance and
are unable to go to the assistance center, please call 1-866-GET-INFO.
- To register for FEMA assistance, call 1-800-621-FEMA, go online at www.fema.gov
or in person at the FEMA trailer by the courthouse.
- Students and parents seeking information on the Greensburg School District
can call (620) 675-8836 or email Greensburg@swprsc.org.
- Greensburg mail is being forwarded to the Pratt Post Office. In addition,
you may register for a free post office box at the Pratt Post Office.
Your health and safety are important! If you are working between the hours
of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., take breaks and drink plenty of water. If you experience
dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or the inability to perspire, you may have heat
exhaustion and should seek immediate medical assistance. Many structures in
Greensburg are unstable- Be careful of falling or shifting debris. If you
find anything you suspect may be hazardous, please leave it alone and notify
emergency personnel. Due to a large amount of stagnant water in the city,
officials are going around with a mosquito fogger in the evenings.
- In case of hazardous weather, residents can seek shelter at the following
locations:
a. The basement of the Kiowa County Courthouse
b. The west basement of the Kiowa County Hospital
c. The basement of the Best Western motel located on the west side of Greensburg.
There is a working storm siren in the City of Greensburg. Officials will test
the storm siren on Thursday evening.
- Child car seats are available through the Kiowa County Health Department.

- On Thursday, May 10, and Friday, May 11, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., law
enforcement officers will begin the process of returning firearms that were
collected and secured as a result of the tornado. Individuals wishing to make
claims should report to the gun trailer located on the north side of the KDOT
building. Those wishing to make claims must give photo identification, address,
and description of the firearm. Serial numbers are preferred. Criminal histories
will be run on all individuals claiming firearms. Additional dates and times
will be announced in the future.
- Greenburg City Administrator Steve Hewitt has announced that the city will
NOT be holding back any portion of residents' insurance payments. For further
information please contact the temporary city hall located southeast of the
Kiowa County Courthouse.
- For information about animal-related issues, to report stray animals, inquire
about a missing pet, or report a dead animal, for pickup please call (620)
723-2897. On Sunday, all animals will be moved to the Pratt County Humane
Society where they will be held for 30 days. If you are unable to pick up
your animal within the 30 day period please call (620) 672-6777 to make boarding
arrangements.
- There are NO plans in the near future to bulldoze or otherwise disturb private
property. Recovery workers are clearing utility rights-of-way in an effort
to restore water and power to the city.
- Any individuals or organizations interested in volunteering to help in Greensburg
should call the United Way by dialing 211 from any phone in Kansas or 1-888-413-4327.
Please do not call the 888 number when calling from within Kansas. People
seeking assistance through the United Way should also call 211.
- A hotline has been established for Greensburg area residents to obtain further
information about the emergency effort and city plans. The numbers are (620)
723-3134 or 3075.
- Free phones have been set up by AT&T on the west side of the court
house for residents and rescuers to use.
- No burning is permitted in the City of Greensburg. Residents should sort
and stack debris at the curb. Household hazardous wastes, such as paint, thinners
and other chemicals, should be separated from other debris for pick up.
- The Kiowa County 911 Center is back in service. Please dial 911 for emergencies
only.
