KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD INVOLVED IN MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS

Several members of the Kansas National Guard will be guest speakers at Memorial Day events across the state on Monday, May 26.
Brig. Gen. Deborah Rose, director of the Joint Staff, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas, will be the guest speaker at a ceremony at the National World War I Museum, 100 W. 26th Street, Kansas City, Mo. During the ceremony, Mr. Frank Woodruff Buckles will be honored as the last known American World War I veteran. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Lt. Col. Mike Erwin, manpower manager, Human Resources Office, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas, will speak on his deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom at a memorial service at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Capt. Murl Riedel, Headquarters and Headquarters Support Battery, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, will be the guest speaker at a ceremony in Clifton, Kan. The public ceremony, sponsored by the Clifton American Legion Post, will begin at 10 a.m. in Berner Memorial Park.

Sgt. 1st Class Clair Hoesing, Kansas National Guard recruiter, Concordia, is the guest speaker for a ceremony at the Greenleaf (Kan.) Cemetery, sponsored by the Greenleaf American Legion. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.

Brig. Gen. Deborah Rose

Brig. Gen. Deborah S. Rose is the director of the Joint Force Headquarters, Kansas National Guard. As the director, she is responsible for the integration of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard forces for homeland security, and for the command of the Joint Task Force - Kansas. She is responsible for formulating, developing and coordinating policies, plans and programs affecting the homeland security missions of the Kansas National Guard.

Rose entered military service with a direct commission into the Nurse Corps in March 1983, where she remained until 1994 when the Wing leadership requested she leave the Nurse Corps to take on the leadership of an underperforming organization. She was moved to a line officer position where she became the 190th Service Flight Commander, transforming the organization to one of the finest in the ANG. She has served in assignments with progressively more responsibility in the 190th Air Refueling Wing, first at a squadron level, then at a group level and finally at the wing level. She became the highest-ranking female in the Kansas National Guard when she was promoted to the rank of colonel in 2002, and upon her promotion to brigadier general in 2007 was also the first female to achieve that rank in the Kansas National Guard.

Rose and her husband, Joe, live on the family farm in rural Overbrook. They are the parents of two children and have five grandchildren.

Lt. Col. Mike Erwin

Lt. Col. Michael Erwin was commissioned as an Armor officer following graduation from Officer Candidate School, Kansas Military Academy in 1990. He was assigned to the 242nd Engineer Company (Dump Truck) in Wichita, where he served as a platoon leader. In January 1992 he was assigned as an aide-de-camp to Brig. Gen. Edward Gerhardt, deputy commander, State Area Command. Among his other assignments were company commander, battalion logistics officer, battalion maintenance operations officer, battalion executive officer, and secretary to the general staff

He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the commander of the 377th Theater Support Command, Special Troops Battalion.

Erwin’s current duty assignment is the manpower manager, Human Resources Office, Joint Forces Headquarters, Topeka, Kan.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management and Organizational Development from Tabor College, Wichita. His military education includes Engineer Officer Basic Course, Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School and the Command and General Staff Course.

Among his awards and decorations are the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Overseas Service Medal.

He is the father of five daughters and lives in Topeka.

Capt. Murl Riedel

Capt. Murl Riedel is commander of Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Marysville.

Riedel joined the Kansas National Guard in 1998. Following basic training at Fort Sill, Okla., Riedel was assigned as a howitzer crew member for Battery B, 1st Battalion, 127th Field Artillery. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in August 2001.

From December 2003 to March 2005, Riedel served as a platoon leader and escort officer for Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery during the battalion’s deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In January 2006, he became operations officer for the battery and was named logistics officer for the battalion in August 2007. He became commander of Battery A in March 2008.

Riedel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Kansas State University in 2001. He recently earned his master’s degree in museum studies from the University of Kansas.

His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Meal with M device, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal and Army Service Medal.

In his civilian career, Riedel is assistant curator for the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka.

Sgt. 1st Class Clair E. Hoesing

Sgt. 1st Class Clair E. Hoesing (“hazing”) began his military career as a telephone repairman in the Nebraska National Guard while attending college in Wayne, Neb. He was assigned to Company B, 67th Support Battalion, Lincoln, Neb.

Hoesing has been full-time with the Kansas Army National Guard for 12 years, including assignments in Wichita and Smith Center as a supply sergeant, in Belleville as a unit administrator and in Concordia as a recruiter.

He has been trained in the following Military Occupational Skills: telephone repair, heavy wheel vehicle mechanic, supply, construction equipment repair and recruiting and retention noncommissioned officer.

Hoesing is a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course and Basic Noncommissioned Officer’s Course. He also graduated from the Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Noncommissioned Officers Course at Camp Robinson, Ark.

His military awards and decorations include Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Medal, and Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon. Hoesing was also awarded the Master Recruiting and Retention NCO badge.

Hoesing has a Master of Science degree in agriculture finance and a bachelor’s degree in marketing.

Hoesing is active in a variety of community programs such as the Scouting Program, Kansas Junior Miss and Friends of the Belleville Library and serves as a mentor for students at area elementary schools.

Hoesing is married and has four children. The Hoesings currently reside in Belleville, Kan.
