IN 12 COUNTIES The U.S. Small Business Administration will make low-interest disaster
loans available to qualifying individuals and businesses in Chapman and
Manhattan that were affected by the tornadoes and severe storms that hit
the communities June 11. The loans may be used to repair and replace homes,
and for personal and business property. "We wish there was more that could be done to help those impacted
by these storms, but appreciate the availability of these loans,"
said Gov Kathleen Sebelius. "We hope access to these funds speeds
the recovery." Applications for the disaster loans may be made at the Disaster Loan
Outreach Center at St. Michael's Parish Center, 230 E. 6th St., Chapman
and the Manhattan Fire Department, 2000 Denison Ave., Manhattan. The center
in Chapman will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 6
p.m., beginning June 24, through July 9. The Manhattan center will operate
June 26 and 27, July 3 and July 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. SBA disaster loans are also being made available to individuals and businesses
in Clay, Dickinson, Geary, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Morris, Ottawa,
Pottawatomie, Riley, Saline, Wabaunsee and Washington Counties. Disaster
loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace
their damaged or destroyed primary residence. Homeowners and renters are
eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal
property. Businesses of any size and private non-profit organizations
may borrow up to $1.5 million. The filing deadline to return applications
for property damage is August 19, 2008. The deadline to return economic
injury applications is March 20, 2009. For additional information, call the SBA's Customer Service Center at
(800) 659-2955 or go on-line to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov or the
SBA's website at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Hearing impaired
individuals may contact SBA at (800) 877 8339. Farm Service Agency Loans Available The Farm Service Agency is also making emergency loans available to qualified
producers who suffered production and physical losses as a result of the
severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that have impacted Kansas in recent
weeks. Producers in Brown, Decatur, Doniphan, Jewell, Marshall, Nemaha,
Norton, Philips, Rawlins, Republic, Smith, and Washington Counties have
until Feb., 20, 2009, to apply for an emergency loan. Eligible loan funds may be used to restore or replace essential property and pay production costs associated with the disaster year. Applicants can borrow up to 100 percent of actual production or physical
losses not to exceed $500,000. The current rate for these low interest
loans is 3.75 percent. Producers must meet eligibility requirements and not be able to obtain
credit from a commercial lender. FSA will consider each loan application
on its own merits, taking into account the extent of losses, security
available and repayment ability. To apply, producers should contact the
FSA office at their local U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center. Mid-June tornado damage to homes and other privately-owned property was
not large enough to qualify the state for federal Individual Assistance
through FEMA. The Individual Assistance Program requires a larger number
of uninsured properties to be affected than the June 11 storms impacted. Initial damage estimates for the counties affected by tornadoes, flooding and other storm damage reveal the state will qualify for public assistance which involves reimbursement to government and non-profit entities. Once preliminary damage assessments are completed for the counties impacted, a federal declaration will be requested for public assistance. -30- |
