FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 17, 2008 No. 08 - 101 KANSAS NATIONAL GUARDSMEN DEPLOYED TO LOUISIANA WILL ALL BE HOME TODAY All of the Kansas National Guardsmen who deployed to Louisiana to assist
with Hurricane Gustav response will be back home by this afternoon. Several members of the 2-137th Infantry are returning to the Kansas City,
Lawrence, and Manhattan armories today after arriving in Wichita last
night. They are expected in Lawrence around noon, Kansas City between
12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. and in Manhattan around 12:30 p.m. The guardsmen deployed to Louisiana starting Sept. 2 and 3 and made up
a total of approximately 600 Kansas National Guard members there conducting
missions ranging from providing security to providing meals and water
to the public at points of distribution sites. In addition to the 2-137th Infantry deployment, the 35th Infantry Division
from Ft. Leavenworth provided coordination of the domestic response operations
carried out by National Guard troops from around the U.S. at Camp Beauregard
near Alexandria, Ls. The 69th Troop Command, the 635th Armor, the 169th
Corps Support Sustainment Battalion, 731st Transportation Company (medium
truck company), and 137th Transportation Company (Palletized Loading System)
also provided missions including transportation, security and assistance
with points of distribution sites. In addition, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management sent a five
member incident management team to Mississippi to provide support in the
state Emergency Operations Center and a 12 member Incident Management
Team (IMT) to Louisiana's state Emergency Operations Center. The personnel
in the IMTs were from the Kansas Highway Patrol, local county emergency
management offices, a community college and local fire and police departments.
All of these individuals have returned home. Deployment to Texas Three UH-60 Black Hawks from the Kansas Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation and Company C, 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Battalion, both from Topeka, remain in Victoria, Texas. The 21 soldiers are assisting with disaster response to Hurricane Ike. One of the three choppers is medical helicopter. -30- |
