FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 7, 2008 No. 08-121 KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD SUPPORTS VETERANS DAY EVENTS ACROSS KANSAS In observance of Veterans Day, the Kansas National Guard will be supporting numerous celebrations across the State of Kansas. Events scheduled for Nov. 8 Concordia - a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army Guard, will be on static display from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the city's Veterans Day Celebration. The event will be held at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 2115 Blosser Drive. Approximately 500 members of the Legion Riders/Patriot Guard will ride from Salina to Concordia with the ride ending at the Armory. Iola - a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, will be doing a flyover at 10:55 a.m. as part of the Veterans Day Celebration scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A parade will be held starting at 1 p.m. Events scheduled for Nov. 11 Topeka - Maj. Gen. Tod M. Bunting, the Adjutant General, will be speaking at the Washburn University Veterans Day Observance. The ceremony will begin at 10:55 a.m. at the Vietnam Memorial on campus, southeast of Morgan Hall. There will be pre-ceremony activities and a reception following the event. The ceremony includes tolling of the bells at the eleventh hour, a salute to recognize members of all the military branches, wreath placement, 21-gun salute and Taps. Topeka - Lt. Col. Roger Aeschliman, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, Topeka, will speak at the All Veterans Memorial at the Great Overland Station. The event is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Topeka - Lt. Col. Mike Erwin, Capt. Jeff Howell, both of Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, Topeka; Tech. Sgt. Scott Ullmer and Staff Sgt. Michael Tremblay, both of the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Topeka; will be guest speakers for a Veterans Day Program at Hope Street Academy, 1900 SW Hope St. The program begins at 10 a.m. Topeka - Command Sgt. Maj. John Ryan, Headquarters, 235th Regiment, Salina, will be the guest speaker at VFW Post 1650, 3110 SW Huntoon, Topeka. The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. Topeka - Jardine Middle School, 2600 S.W. 33rd is hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony starting at 2 p.m. Several soldiers from 69th Troop Command, Topeka, will be in attendance and recognized at the ceremony. Clifton - Sgt. 1st Class Chris Foster, Battery A (-), 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Marysville, will be the guest speaker for a ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 227. There will be a parade beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a program at Berner Memorial Park. Emporia - A KC-135 stratotanker from the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air Guard, will be providing a flyover of the Veterans Day Parade which starts at approximately 9:45 a.m. Eskridge - Brig. Gen. Deborah Rose, the director of Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas, Topeka will be the guest speaker at a ceremony starting at 11:11 a.m. A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army National Guard, will be on static display from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Greensburg - The 184th Intelligence Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, will be presenting the U.S. flag recovered from the Kiowa County Courthouse by airmen during the Greensburg tornado recovery mission. The flag will be presented back to the community at the high school in a ceremony starting at 2 p.m.. In addition to presenting the flag back to the community, 184 Intelligence Wing Honor Guard will conduct a flag folding ceremony and a plaque from the NYC Fire Department will be presented to the community. Kensington - Capt. Wesley Topel, 170th Maintenance Company (-), Norton, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. at Kensington High School, 209 E. Ash St. Leavenworth - Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Col. (Promotable) Alex Duckworth, 35th Infantry Division, Fort Leavenworth will be riding in the Veterans Day parade, which begins at 11 a.m. The Kansas National Guard will have several pieces of military equipment in the parade from the following units: 35th Division, 169th Command Sustainment Support Brigade, and the 891st Engineering Battalion. A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army National Guard, will be providing a flyover at the beginning of the parade. Manhattan - A KC-135 stratotanker from the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air Guard, will be providing a flyover at the beginning of the Veterans Day Parade which starts at 9:30 a.m. Merriam - Lt.
