KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD’S 635TH ARMOR TO BE INACTIVATED DECEMBER 6 AT MANHATTAN CEREMONY
The Kansas National Guard's 1st Battalion, 635th Armor will be inactivated and the 2nd Battalion 137th Infantry will be reorganized to become the 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry (Combined Arms) on Saturday, Dec. 6. The 11 a.m. ceremony will take place at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 721 Levee Drive, Manhattan.
This is not the first inactivation for the 1-635th. After World War II, the 1-635th was part of the military draw-down. However, since its reactivation in 1976, the unit has continued to proudly serve the Kansas National Guard. The 1-635th earned the Army Superior Unit Award during their mission in Kosovo. The unit retains the honor of being distinguished with the French Croix de Guerre with Palm--World War II Streamer embroidered Normandy and was cited in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army for action in the Ardennes.
In addition to their involvement in World War II, the 1-635th has been involved in several deployments including Kosovo, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The 2-137th, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is also no stranger to change as the needs of the Kansas National Guard evolved with each conflict. The 2-137th began as a volunteer militia in 1879, becoming part of the KSNG in 1885. Along with battles on the frontier the 2-137th was involved in the Philippine Insurrection, World War I, World War II, Global War on Terrorism: Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
