Deadly overnight storms damage Southeast and South Central Kansas

Severe storms damaged homes and properties, flooded roads and created power outages throughout southeast and south central Kansas. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed the death of a New Albany resident where straight line winds caused severe damage.

According to Westar Energy, 21,374 customers are without power due to storm damage.

In New Albany, the post office, the United Methodist Church and at least one home were completely destroyed, while major damage is being reported to the CO-OP in McCune and to South East High School in Cherokee.

Flooding and power outages have caused school closings in Bourbon, Greenwood and Lyon Counties.

The following counties are reporting flooding:  Anderson County, Barton County, Bourbon County, Butler County, Chase County, Greenwood County, Lyon County, Lyons County, Marion County, McPherson County, Rice County, Sedgwick County and Wilson County.

Wind damage is being reported in the following counties: Butler County with wind damage in the cities of Benton, El Dorado, and Towanda; Crawford County, Elk County, Labette County, Montgomery County, Reno County, Wilson County

There is currently one report of lightning damage in Thomas County, causing power disruption.

Butler County is experience road closures along K-254 located between 19.98 and Bridge No. 008-B0166 carrying east bound K-254 HWY over Union Pacific Railroad; and additionally between 24.10 and Bridge No. 008-B0161 carrying east bound K-254 HWY over I-35 HWY (KTA). The road is closed from Ohio Street to El Dorado due to power lines down crossing the roadway.

Cherokee County reports the following road closures:  U69/U160/K7 (Route Intersection) and U400/K7 (Route Intersection). A complete list of current road closures is available by calling 511 or going to http://511.ksdot.org.

The State Emergency Operations Center has been activated at Level 2- Partial Activation at 8 a.m.
