FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 1, 2009 No. 09-055 KANSAS RECEIVES EXTENSION TO FILE FOR FEDERAL DISASTER ASSISTANCEGov. Mark Parkinson has requested and received an extension on the deadline to file for federal assistance for damages caused by flooding during the period April 25-May 8, 2009. Parkinson requested the extension to allow time for a more thorough assessment of damages in the 45 affected counties. The extension was granted until July 8, 2009. “We’re still dealing with the damage assessments from a surprise winter storm that hit us in March,” said Parkinson. “This extension will allow us to get a more complete and accurate picture of the damages caused by the severe storms and floods that struck in late April.” Parkinson declared a State of Disaster Emergency on May 5 for 20 counties due to flooding, tornado and high winds that resulted in five fatalities, multiple injuries and damage to homes and businesses. He amended the declaration May 15 to include 25 additional counties. The counties named in the amended declaration are Allen, Anderson, Barton, Barber, Butler, Bourbon, Chautauqua, Chase, Cherokee, Clay, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Dickinson, Douglas, Elk, Finney, Franklin, Geary, Greenwood, Harper, Harvey, Jackson, Kingman, Labette, Leavenworth, Linn, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Miami, Montgomery, Neosho, Osage, Reno, Rice, Riley, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Sumner, Wabaunsee, Wilson and Woodson. -30- Follow the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department on Twitter at http://twitter.com/KSAdjutantGen |
