FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 2, 2009 No. 09-070 KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD HOSTS 10th ANNUAL KIDS CAMP JULY 6-10 IN SALINAChildren of Kansas National Guardsmen will have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and build memories during the 10th annual Kansas National Guard Kids Camp, July 6-10, at the Kansas Regional Training Institute in Salina. Campers range from age 8 to 12 and are from all across Kansas. “Operation Kids Camp is a unique experience for Kansas Guard youth all over the state of Kansas to get together,” said Dezaree Harding, Kansas National Guard State Youth Coordinator. “Kids Camp is a great opportunity for the children to experience what their parents go through when they are preparing for a deployment or attending monthly training. The children really enjoy the activities and have a lot of fun learning what it’s like to be a Soldier, many of them have attended camp for multiple years." “These camps are a great outlet for kids and teens to reconnect while sharing a common bond as part of a larger Guard family, allowing them a greater understanding of what it means to have a Guard parent,” said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general. “The attributes of leadership and teamwork are foundational in the camp activities, which are part of their parents’ National Guard training.” The camp is open to all children of National Guard members ages 9 to 12. A similar Teen Camp is also available for ages 13-17, Aug. 1-5 in Salina, During the camp, the participants are divided into squads and take part in a variety of team-building exercises and experiences, games, sports, target archery, target paintball, swimming, arts and crafts, military transportation simulator, M-16 laser simulator, a night road march and more. The Salina Police and Fire Departments will be involved with activities throughout the week. The Kansas National Guard will host the military simulations and a land navigation experience using Global Positioning Systems and compasses. Graduation CeremonyA graduation ceremony will be held for the students Friday, July 10, at 10:30 a.m. Brig. Gen.
