FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 21, 2009 No. 09-078 SUMMIT TO DISCUSS HUMAN SERVICES IN DISASTERRegistration is still open for the “Human Services in Disaster Summit” hosted by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. The summit will be July 30 and 31 at the Ramada Inn Downtown in Topeka, Kan. The free two-day conference is targeted toward social workers, emergency responders, human service professionals, disaster service volunteers, voluntary organizations active in disaster and others in emergency management roles. Topics to be discussed include the National Shelter System, Donations Management, Continuity of Operations Planning, Community Organizations Active in Disaster, Pets in Disaster, New Madrid Seismic Zone, Long-term Recovery, Public Relations in Disaster, Donations Management and other topics of interest. Bill Adams, president, Board of Directors, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Other speakers include Angee Morgan, deputy director of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, and Jeremy Goodwin, chief meteorologist for WIBW Channel 13. "This is the first event of this type in Kansas and is long-overdue. Meeting together in this type of setting before a disaster allows us to learn what everyone has to offer and helps us provide a more successful response to disasters," Morgan said. Breakfast will be provided on both days and lunch will be provided the first day. The registration deadline is Friday, July 24.
