FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 10, 2009 No. 09-085 SEVERE STORMS CUT THROUGH NORTH CENTRAL KANSASSevere storms swept through North Central Kansas during the late morning and early afternoon hours today, bringing high straight-line winds, rain and hail that caused damages to power lines, trees and outbuildings. Winds reaching 100 mph were reported. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management, a division of the Adjutant General’s Department, activated the State Emergency Operations Center at 12:48 p.m. and began taking damage reports from emergency managers in a number of Kansas counties. As many as 12,000 customers were without power at the peak of the storm. Officials in Dickinson County reported Hwy K-15 and Hwy K-43 are closed due to downed power lines and are expected to begin to be cleared by about 4:30 p.m. Quarter inch hail was reported and a metal building was blown apart. Some minor street flooding was also reported. A roof was blown off a business and a church steeple was damaged in Saline County. Hwy K-15 was also closed in Saline County due to downed power lines. A semi-trailer was reported overturned on I-70 in Lincoln County and 22 boating accidents were reported in Sedgwick County. Franklin County reports a building blown into the middle of Hwy K-59 at Princeton and localized flooding.
