BATTALION COMMAND WILL CHANGE HANDS AUGUST 16

Lt. Col. Anthony Mohatt, commander of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, will hand over the reins of command to Lt. Col. Gregory Mittman during a ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 16.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 100 S. 20th St., Kansas City, Kan.

“I am truly blessed and excited to be taking command of such a distinguished and professional battalion,” said Mittman. “I recognize that commanding America’s heroic citizen-soldiers is a sacred trust and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Mohatt became commander of the 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry (Mechanized) in February 2007 and during his tenure oversaw the battalion’s transition to a Combined Arms Battalion when it merged with the 1st Battalion, 635th Armor in December 2008.  The 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment is headquartered in Kansas City with subordinate units located in Emporia, Junction City, Lawrence, Lenexa, Manhattan, Topeka and Wichita.

Lt. Col. Gregory Mittman

Lt. Col. Gregory Mittman serves as the operations officer, 69th Troop Command in Topeka. He recently completed a resident tour at the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth. In November 2006, Mittman returned from a year long combat deployment to Iraq as the operations officer and later the executive officer for 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry.

Mittman enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard in 1985 as a private in Company A, 1st Battalion, 137th Infantry, Winfield, Kan. In 1988 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant of Infantry from the Kansas Army National Guard Officer Candidate School.  His assignments have included rifle platoon leader, support platoon leader, company executive officer, company commander, battalion personnel officer, Officer Candidate School instructor and commander, battalion operations officer, battalion executive officer, and brigade operations officer. The majority of his time in uniform has been spent as a member of the 137th Infantry Regiment. 

Mittman received a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Baker University, a master’s degree in Special Education from Wichita State University and a Master of Military Art and Science degree from the Command and General Staff College. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Armor Advance Courses; the Combined Arms and Services Staff School; and the Army Command and General Staff School and the Army Battalion Pre-Command Course.

His military awards and decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kansas Army National Guard Meritorious Service Ribbon, Kansas Army National Guard Commendation Ribbon and the State Emergency Service Ribbon with three Sunflower Devices.

In his civilian career, Mittman works as a school administrator in Valley Center, Kan. He is a National Board Certified Teacher, Kansas Master Teacher and served seven years as an elected city council member in Bel Aire, Kan., before resigning to deploy and serve with his Army National Guard unit in Iraq.

Mittman is married to the former Johanna Feist of Claflin, Kan. They have two children, Deven and Erin, who attend Wichita schools.

Lt. Col. Anthony V. Mohatt

Mohatt enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard in 1986 as a tactical radio repairman in Company C, 1st Battalion, 635th Armor. He was promoted to sergeant and later decided to enter the Kansas Officer Candidate School where he received his commission as an Armor second lieutenant in 1990.

Mohatt’s assignments include armor platoon leader, company executive officer and company commander of Company A, 1st Battalion, 635th Armor; battalion maintenance officer, battalion adjutant, and air operations officer 1st Battalion, 635th Armor, and assistant operations officer, 35th Infantry Division (Mechanized). He deployed to Germany as the battalion’s operations officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and to Iraq as the battalion’s executive officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mohatt’s education includes a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from Wichita State University and Master of Military Science from the Command and General Staff College, a double bachelor’s degree of general studies in political science and sociology from Kansas University. His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic and Advance courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Air Force Counter Intelligence Course, Air Force Inspector General’s Course, Resident Army Command and General Staff College, the Army Advance War Fighter Course, Infantry Battalion Pre Command Course, Bradley Battalion Pre Command Course, and the Tactical Commanders Decision Program.

Among his many awards and decorations are the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service and Expeditionary Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.

In his civilian job, Mohatt is a senior special agent for the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General.

Mohatt lives in Sioux Falls, S.D., with his wife, Jennifer and two daughters Madeline and Isabella.
