KANSAS NATIONAL GUARDSMEN DEPLOY FOR PEACEKEEPING MISSION IN THE BALKANS

Approximately 20 soldiers of the Kansas National Guard will be honored during a ceremony on Friday, Aug. 14, as they prepare to deploy to Kosovo for a year-long peacekeeping mission.

The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. at the South Topeka Armory, J Street and Gary Ormsby Drive, Forbes Field, Topeka. The public is cordially invited to attend. The official party will include Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general.

The soldiers are from Headquarters and Headquarters Company and Company A of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan. The commander is Capt. Darren Koberlein.

The soldiers will deploy to Camp Atterbury, Ind., for additional mission-specific training and then on to Kosovo, where they will be attached to the 231st Brigade Support Battalion, North Dakota National Guard, as the Quick Reaction Force for Task Force Defender, KFOR 12, Multinational Task Force East.

“More and more, the citizen-soldiers of this nation are being called on to assume the role of peacekeeper in theaters across the sea,” said Bunting. “I have every confidence that these soldiers will carry out this mission with the same dedication and professionalism that they have shown in other missions at home and elsewhere.”
