Marketing/Advertising/PR

Marketing is the customer and revenues management portion of the business and extends greatly from traditional sales and advertising. The following resources provide information on the marketing function.

The SBA Marketing and Outreach section includes numerous marketing tools.

The American Marketing Association is a worldwide professional association for marketers.

Agricultural Marketing Resource Center is a national resource for producers interested in value-added agriculture.

FAMEE Foundation provides in-depth, free small business marketing courses for entrepreneurs.

Inc.com has an extensive list of archived articles about marketing along with many other small business tools and information.

The Business Owner's Toolkit offers step by step marketing advice, as well as comprehensive tools in many other aspects of small business.

MarketingProfs is an online business blog which features many listings from various marketing experts.

Small Business Marketing Tips & Strategies is an online business blog which features many listings from various marketing experts and organizations in Kansas.

Kansas City Small Business Journal Marketing Resources includes numerous resources for sales and marketing. Their library includes archived articles and reports.


Microloan Programs

A variety of MicroLoan programs exist. Often banks are reluctant to make very small business loans, which is where these programs come into play. Often these loans require bank rejection letters accompanying the application. The goal of these loans is to make small loans when traditional bank financing is not possible.

The U.S. SBA has information about the restructured Community Express Pilot Loan Program.

Innovative Bank Microloan Program - Is also part of the SBA's Community Loan Express Program. Loans are offered in denominations of 5K, 10K, and 15K. A $450 loan application fee must be submitted with application. Also requires technical assistance, which can be obtained from your local KSBDC office. For more information, contact your local KSBDC center.

Kansas USDA - Administers the USDA's business development program for rural communities. For more information, visit their website at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/ks/cbp-biz.htm

Certified Development Companies - Some CDC's offer microloan programs and others do not. For a complete listing of CDC's in Kansas, feel free to visit http://www.KACDC.com.

RC&D offices - To find your local RC&D office, http://ks.nrce.usda.gov/partnerships/rcd.html RC&D offices often provide business development assistance in rural areas. Individual RC&D offices may or may not have loan programs.

KS Rural Development Loans - Availability starting January 1, 2005. Program was created with the Kansas Economic Growth Act of 2004. Business must be located in a city with fewer than 50K. Loan parameters vary by region. For more information, contact your local KSBDC office.

Center for Entrepreneurship at Wichita State University: The Kansas Family Business Forum The forum is designed to provide unique learning experiences to those involved with family businesses. Educational seminars bring owners, families and managers together to address issues of ownership and management succession, strategic planning, estate planning, family dynamics and family governance. Forum programming features a mix of national and local experts on family business issues.

Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC) is a private/public partnership established by Kansas to promote technology based economic development. KTEC assists Kansas entrepreneurs and technology companies by supporting the development and commercialization of new technologies through a statewide network designed and built to support researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology companies through each phase of the technology life cycle.

The ultimate goal of the program is to create rapid growth companies and higher paying jobs. The KTEC's many programs and affiliate organizations fall into three basic functional areas:

Strategic Research and Development/Centers of Excellence: Located at the state's universities, these Centers conduct basic and applied industry-led research that is the foundation for new products and technologies.

KTEC's Intense, Hands-on Business Assistance/Incubators Unique private/public partnerships designed to turn intellectual property and science into businesses and products to sell in the marketplace.

KTEC Investment Funds: KTEC provides equity investment in early-stage technology companies and helps companies acquire the capital they need in critical early states.

The U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Technology administers the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program. Through these two competitive programs, SBA ensures that the nation's small, high-tech, innovative businesses are a significant part of the federal government's research and development efforts. Eleven federal departments participate in the SBIR program; five departments participate in the STTR program awarding $2 billion to small high-tech businesses.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has devoted this sight to "small business technology research" and provides information about finding ways to encourage government funding of the latest technology.

Kansas Innovation Marketplace is a web-based forum aiming to match Kansas inventors with buyers.

The Small Business Administration provides specific information for veterans who own or aspire to own small businesses. .

Patriot Express is a new pilot loan initiative (June 2007) for veterans and members of the military community who want to establish or expand small businesses.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers entrepreneurial guidance to existing or prospective small business owners who are veterans.

Getting Veterans Back to Business Resource Guide was developed by the SBA for small business owners returning from an active tour. It provides tools to help reestablish a business.

The Veterans Business Outreach Center The mission of the VBOC is to help create, retain and develop businesses by coupling service-disabled veterans with local SBA sponsored technical and managerial assistance.

Vet Fran is a voluntary effort of International Franchise Association member companies that is designed to encourage franchise ownership by offering financial assistance to honorably discharged veterans.

Vet Biz is the Center for Veterans Enterprise Web portal. The mission of the CVE is to improve the business climate for veterans, to minmize access barriers and to inform the public about the benefits of working with veteran-owned small businesses.

The Veterans Administration's Office of Small Disadvantaged Business Utilization site assists veterans with identifying opportunities related to their veteran status.

The SBA Office of Advocacy has a research project on veterans and business ownership-comlted in November 2004.

NaVOBA this is the National Veteran-Owned Business Association site.

Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs has information and resources for veterans and their families.

US Census data on Veteran Business Owners this includes 2002 survey information on the characteristics of veteran owned businesses and veteran business owners.

The Kansas Women's Business Center provides a variety of resources for women-owned businesses in the state of Kansas.

Office of Women's Business Ownership (OWBO) is part of the SBA Program and is a site designed to help women run or start a small business.

The Center for Women's Business Research is the go-to source on the trends, characteristics, achievements, and challenges of women business owners and their enterprises.

Womenbiz.com provides information about government contracts and bids and is specifically directed at women-owed businesses.

Women-21.gov The Department of Labor and the Small Business Administration, along with many other partners, have created this site to provide women entreprenuers with information and resources to help their businesses reach their maximum potential.
