Licensure in Kansas requires successful completion of the NAPLEX and the MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination). Complete the Application for Licensure Examination and return to the Kansas Board of Pharmacy with a $50 fee. To register for the MPJE and NAPLEX go to NABP's website.

A Candidate for licensure must be a graduate of a school of pharmacy approved by the Board and must possess a minimum of 1500 intern hours of pharmaceutical experience. Intern experiential hours must be certified by affidavit on file with the board if the hours were completed in Kansas, or by transfer of hours from any other state board office where the hours were registered on file.

Applicants will be notified of examination results BY MAIL ONLY OR YOU MAY CHECK YOUR SCORE ON OUR WEBSITE. Make a copy of your ATT before taking your exams, so you can check your scores. Application for NAPLEX score transfers must be postmarked no later than the date of your examination or submitted electronically. Because the MPJE is unique to the state or jurisdiction in which you are seeking licensure, it is not possible to transfer your MPJE score to another state. If you are seeking licensure in an additional state, call that state for licensure requirements.

Any applicant who transfers their NAPLEX score to Kansas must also file an Application for Licensure by Examination with the Board and pass the Kansas MPJE. The applicant is responsible for obtaining certification of experiential hours to the Kansas Board from another state if needed.

To reciprocate your license to Kansas, go to NABP's website to complete the NABP Preliminary Application for Transfer of Pharmaceutic Licensure and to register to take the MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination). Approximately 4-6 weeks after submitting your applications, NABP will mail to you the Official Application. Mail the Official Application, along with a check (personal check is acceptable) for $80 payable to the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy.

Approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting application to our office, you will receive an ATT (Authorization to Test). The ATT is used to schedule your MPJE with Prometric Testing Center. Once you have taken the MPJE, NABP will forward your MPJE score to the Board office. The Board office will notify you of your passing results and send you your pharmacist pocket card with license number. We mail exam results out daily and we also have them available on our website by using your ATT number. Make sure you keep a copy of your ATT, so you can check our website for exam results. The permanent wall certificate will be mailed to you after the Board members meet and sign the certificates.

If you do not pass the MPJE you must wait a minimum of 30 days to retake the examination.

The board office must receive the Official Application within 90 days from the date on the application. You must take the MPJE within one (1) year from your initial date of eligibility.

If the state from which you are transferring your license requires one year of licensure prior to transferring to that state, Kansas requires the same time period before consideration of licensure. (Example: Nebraska requires one year of licensure prior to transferring to Nebraska; therefore, all applicants transferring from Nebraska to Kansas must be licensed for at least one year in Nebraska.)

All pharmaceutical experience required by law and regulations shall be supervised by a registered pharmacist who has a minimum of 2 years experience in the active practice of pharmacy as a registered pharmacist immediately preceding acceptance by the Board as a preceptor.

Interns shall register with the Board of Pharmacy. Once registered as an intern, all hours to be counted shall be completed within 6 years, not counting military service, unless special permission extending the time period is obtained in writing from the Board.

1500 clock hours as a registered intern working under a registered preceptor. All hours worked when the intern is in regular attendance at an accredited school of pharmacy and during vacation time and other times when the intern is enrolled but not in regular attendance at an accredited school of pharmacy may be counted as qualified hours. However, not more than 60 hours shall be acquired in any one week; or

  No time may accrue to a student prior to acceptance in an accredited school of pharmacy.

Proof of pharmaceutical experience shall be by affidavits filed with the Executive Secretary of the Board from the applicant and registered pharmacist or pharmacists who supervised the intern.

On the reverse side of the preceptor-internship affidavit, the intern should itemize specific individual periods and specific individual hours of allowable internship time performed which have been certified by the preceptor, compute and total.

This certified record of internship time should be sent to the office of the Executive Secretary at least quarterly in order that a current file may be maintained. Interns should also keep a copy of every affidavit.

All affidavits which are to be submitted are the responsibility of the intern and not the preceptor.

Kansas requires the following from foreign pharmacists before taking the NAPLEX and MPJE.

1. Copy of FPGEC

2. Passing scores on the TOEFL (iBT) (Writing-24, Speaking-26, Listening-18, Reading-21) or the TSE (50) and TOEFL (230)

3. 1500 intern hours
Submit a copy of your FPGEC with the intern application. If your intern hours are in another state, then request that state to transfer your hours here to Kansas.

4. Submit an Application for Licensure Examination along with $50

If you cannot take the FPGEE because a 5-year degree is needed to qualify, then there is no other alternative.

68-1-1f Foreign graduates. (a) Each applicant who has graduated from a school or college of pharmacy or a pharmacy department of a uni-
versity located outside of the United States or who is not a citizen of the United States shall provide proof that the applicant has reasonable ability to communicate verbally and in writing with the general public in English as specified in this regulation.
(b) Each foreign applicant shall be required to meet one og the following English language requirements for lecensure under the pharmacy act of the state of Kansas;
(1) Pass the test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 570 and the test of spoken English (TSE) with a score of at least 50; or
(2) Pass the internet-based TOEFL )iBT) as specified in K.A.R. 68-1-1g.

68-1-1g Internet-based TOEFL. Except as specified in K.A.R. 68-1-1f, each foreign applicant shall be required to meet the English requirement for licensure under the pharmacy act of the state of Kansas by passing the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with at least the following minimum scores:
(a) 24 in writing;
(b) 26 in speaking;
(c) 18 in listening; and
(d) 21 in reading.

Kansas requires 1500 intern hours and passing scores on the NAPLEX and MPJE. Click on the following link to obtain an intern application. INTERN APPLICATION Submit your application along with copies of proof of passing the FPGEE or the TOEFL (iBT). Once you have obtained 1500 intern hours, please call or e-mail our office and ask for a licensure packet which will start the process to take the NAPLEX and MPJE.

In 2003 the legislature enacted a law requiring the Board of Pharmacy to register all pharmacy technicians. If you are working as a pharmacy technician you need to be registered with the Board. The application can be found on the Board website at http://www.kansas.gov/pharmacy/applications.html . It is under the link Applications and Forms and is titled Technician Application and Instructions. You only need to register once regardless of how many pharmacies you work for or whether you change jobs. You will keep the same registration number forever. If you have your registration card and you begin working for another pharmacy let them see your registration number so that they do not have you fill out another application or take the test again. The cost of registration is $25.00.

You will need to take a test before you register. Your employer will give you the test and then sign the bottom of your Kansas Board of Pharmacy Application for Registration. The test is approximately 20 questions and does not require that you go to school. It has nothing to do with the national certification test. Your employer will have information on this test so you do not need to call the Board Office.

Every two years you will renew your Board of Pharmacy registration. This form is not on the Board website. You do not need to take a test to renew. You will receive a renewal in the mail at your home address so it is important that you always let the Board of Pharmacy know if you move. If your registration number ends in an even number you will renew on even years. If your registration ends in an odd number you will renew on odd years. The Board will only send out renewals to those persons who are up for renewal. If you were to receive a renewal and you do not get it then you may contact the Board office but check to make sure that your license registration is odd or even before you call. You will not receive a renewal if it is not your year to renew. The renewal is $25.00. The form is not the same as the original application so please do not fill out an application if you are renewing. The renewal form is not on the internet.

Registration and Certification is not the same thing. If you wish to become a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) you will need to contact the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the Exam for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT). Some employers require that you receive national certification but the Board of Pharmacy does not require this. To apply for the national exam go to www.ptcb.org or www.nationaltechexam.org . Certification is not required by the Board and has nothing to do with your Board registration. Both the ExCPT and PCTB certification programs require annual continuing education but the Board of Pharmacy registration does not require any CE hours.
