PROPER STERILIZER PROTCOL


Pre Autoclave

Contaminated tools/equipment should be placed directly in a closed container near your work station containing a protein dissolving detergent or enzyme cleaner, to be submerged and soaked. The tools/equipment should then be taken, in the container, to the sink, to be drained, and then to the ultra sonic cleaner. It is not advisable to carry contaminated tools and equipment across the shop to the ultra sonic cleaner by hand or even wrapped in plastic or paper towels due to the increased chance of cross contamination. Remember to Use Universal Precautions. Universal precautions is an approach to infection control to treat all human blood and certain human body fluids as if they were known to be infectious for HIV, HBV and other blood borne pathogens, (Blood borne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030(b) definitions).

Part One

1. Don gloves.*
2. Drain container holding contaminated tools.
3. Rinse tools in sink.
4. Place tools in ultra sonic for full cycle.
5. Dispose of gloves.

Part Two

1. Don gloves.*
2. Scrub tools.
3. Set tools out to dry.
4. Dispose of gloves.

Part Three

1. Don gloves.*
2. Package tools and mark with date.
3. Place tools in sterilizer for full cycle.
4. Dispose of gloves.

Part Four

1. Don gloves.*
2. Remove sterile packages.
3. Dry if necessary.
4. Place sterile packages in closed container.
5. Dispose of gloves.


* OSHA: Change gloves. 1910.1030(d) (2) (v) Employers shall ensure that employees wash their hands immediately or as soon as feasible after removal of gloves or other personal protective equipment.
