Investigations Branch

The Investigations Branch is divided into three regions of Kansas: Northeast, Southeast, and West. Each region is comprised of Major Crimes, Special Operations and a Child Victims Unit.

Agents assigned to Major Crimes provide professional investigative assistance to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Agencies request KBI assistance when crimes are committed in their jurisdictions that require expert criminal investigative skills. Special agents focus primarily on investigating criminal acts such as homicides, sexual assaults, officer-involved shootings, and public corruption cases.

Agents in Special Operations provide investigative, technical, and tactical services to Kansas law enforcement agencies. They deploy a proactive approach to targeting criminal offenders who pose the greatest threat to Kansas citizens, and work to disrupt and dismantle narcotics manufacturing and distribution operations.

KBI Child Victims Units have agents across the state who investigate crimes committed against children including child sexual abuse cases, child physical abuse cases, and child exploitation cases.

The Investigations Branch also comprises specialty programs and units such as the Crime Scene Response Team, the K-9 Unit, the Cyber Crimes Unit, AMBER alert, and the High Risk Warrant Team.
